Exploring Montreal's Old Jewish Connection's through food Part 1: Moishe's, the old school Steakhouse

Montreal, a city famed for its beautiful architecture and the amazing nightlife, is rich in a tradition of accepting immigrants from all around the world. The food of the Jewish immigrants are considered to be inherently Montreal. From Bagel's to smoked meat, some of the most iconic food of this city is Jewish in origin. In the past few weeks, Iv'e visited some of the most famed Jewish landmarks of Montreal's food scene.

Moishe's, the quintessential Montreal Steakhouse

Well, one of Montreal's oldest, most respected steakhouse happen's to be an old school Jewish institution. Opened by a Romanian Jewish immigrant in 1938, it became an important fixture of the Montreal culinary scene since then. The food is simple, steakhouse-fare, full of old-world Jewish recipes and some reinterpreted classics. They also have a discount menu after 9PM if you are on a budget. This place is the true definition of an old school Jewish Steakhouses. Pumpernickel, baguette, butter on ice, amazing, but also an expensive wine list, great classic cocktails, true classics.

The meals, always starts, and ends, with the famous Coleslaw, a peppery, sour, yet balanced combination of cabbage, carrots, spices and vinegar, and the amazing pickles, some of the best in the city. Reassuring to their older clientele, while exciting enough for anyone else to eat.

Ok, I didn't order the chopped liver, which is out of this world by the way, and I highly recommend to anyone who goes there, but I love salmon tartare, and had to try it. It was a bit small, but not surprising because it was on the after 9 menu. It was nonetheless a classic and a great tartare.



My main was a ribsteak and a MonteCarlo Potato. The potato was a delicious twice-baked potato, full of butter, green onion, and potatoes which has the consistency of mashed potatoes, baked.  


The steak was delicious, classic meat. It had a great broiling flavour, while maintaining a rareness in the meat, which only happens when you broil your meat at high heat. Washed down with the cheapest bottle on the list, I mean, how can it go badly? Good meat and potatoes, everything that you could want for a steak dinner.

Damn it was a nice meal.
